Viera's David McKay Makes MLB Debut

The former Viera High School standout made his major league debut for the Seattle Mariners with a scoreless inning against the Texas Rangers on May 20, 2019. In five games, he compiled a 1.80 ERA and opponents batted .221 against him before he was sent back down to Triple-A Tacoma when Seattle recalled Chasen Bradford.

Viera Drops Game at Leto 3-2 After Late Score in Regional Final
Wednesday's game against Leto was a heartbreaker for Viera , as they lost the lead late in a 3-2 defeat. The game was tied at two with Leto batting in the bottom of the sixth when an error scored one run for Leto. The pitching was strong on both sides. Leto pitchers struck out 11, while Viera sat down five. 

Christian Suarez got the win for Leto. He surrendered two runs on eight hits over five and a third innings, striking out seven. Franklyn Hernandez threw one and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen. Eric Allen took the loss for Viera . He allowed three hits and three runs over six innings, striking out five and walking zero.

Viera totaled ten hits. Alan Espinal and Andrew Brait each had multiple hits for Viera . Espinal went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Viera in hits.

Viera Advances to Regional Final
Viera took the lead late in a 2-1 victory over Melbourne in their 7A Regional Semifinal game on Saturday evening. The game was tied at 1-1 with Viera batting in the top of the ninth when Andrew Brait singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Viera pitchers struck out seven, while Melbourne pitchers sat down five. Melbourne got things moving in the third inning, when Jason Blackstone singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run. In the top of the sixth inning, Viera tied things up at one on a Declan McDermott solo homer. Billy Moser was the winning pitcher for Viera . He went two innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits and striking out five. Trey Wheeler took the loss for Melbourne. He allowed two hits and zero runs, walking zero.

Tyler Madl started the game for Viera . He went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two. Ridge Skarbek started the game for Melbourne. He lasted six innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out four. Connor Leary went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Viera in hits. Blackstone led Melbourne with two hits in three at bats.

Hawk's Advance to Regional Semifinals
Viera won big over Pine Ridge 8-1 on Wednesday in their 7A Regional Quarterfinal matchup. Viera opened up scoring in the first inning scoring one run when Alan Espinal tripled. Viera notched four runs in the third inning. Alan Espinal, Zach Taylor, and Edian Espinal each drove in runs during the inning. Eric Allen was credited with the victory for Viera . He went seven innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out four. Ramphis Carlo took the loss for Pine Ridge. He surrendered six runs on seven hits over two and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking one.
Viera tallied ten hits on the day. Alan Espinal, Edian Espinal, and Connor Leary all had multiple hits for Viera.

David McKay Earns Arizona Fall League All-Star Selection & Inducted into Viera High School Hall of Fame
Viera Alumi David McKay pictured to the left delivers a pitch in the 2018 Arizona Fall League. David posted a 6-2 record in 2018 for the Seattle Mariner's Double A  and Triple A affiliate's. The former Hawk was also selected to the Arizona Fall League's All-Star Team.
David will be inducted into the Viera High School's Athletic Hall of Fame next month on December 8th. Rob Leary will be the keynote speaker for the ceremony. Tickets are on sale in the Athletic Office. For more information contact Coach Doty. Congratualations to David for his fine accomplishments!
